web-IMG_8749-20160606-EditArizona Heat All-Stars was the very first all-star cheer gym in the state of Arizona.  Founded in 1997 by Jason and Krystal Mitchell, the program became a major fixture of all-star cheer in Arizona and has been a positive influence on the lives of many athletes, some of whom have returned to the Heat family as coaches and staff.  In the years following the gym’s opening, Arizona Heat has gone through many adjustments, including a change of ownership when the Mitchells passed the business on to Coach Tommy Velasquez in May of 2012.  Since then, Tommy and his staff have been able to take the gym from renting floor space in another gym to re-establishing their own facility and taking two teams to National Championship titles at the D2 Summit in Tampa, Florida in 2016.

Tommy has carried on the traditions established by the Mitchells of being a positive influence on the lives of every athlete who walks through Arizona Heat’s doors, emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship, family values, respect for oneself and others, and maintaining a positive attitude whether winning or losing.  Arizona Heat is a true family gym, and we hope you will come and see why so many choose to call our gym their second home.

Meet Our Staff

Tommy Velasquez

Owner, CEO, & Coach

Tommy is the first one you will meet when you step foot through our doors to become part of the Arizona Heat family.  Tommy began his cheer career at Arizona Heat as a teen, and went on to become a cheerleading World Champion and USASF certified coach.  His passion for competitive cheer led him to take the reins of Arizona Heat All-Stars in 2012.  Since then, he has led our teams to numerous national titles, including two championships at the D2 Summit in Tampa, Florida in 2016.  His caring and positive attitude and his dedication to the kids make him an amazing leader for the gym.  Tommy is also our team choreographer and offers private lessons for interested athletes.

Ruben Romero

Owner & CFO

Ruben is in charge of the financial side of the Arizona Heat business.  You can sometimes see him as one of our friendly faces at the front desk, where he also handles team logistics and travel arrangements as required throughout the season.

Clancey McBride

Program Director & Coach

Clancey has been teaching young athletes in the gymnastics and cheer world since he started working in his mom’s gym at the age of 12.  He began coaching professionally in 2006, and in 2014 he brought his signature energy and passion for teaching young athletes to Arizona Heat and instantly became an integral part of our gym family.  He is a cheerleading World Champion, a USASF certified coach, and is responsible for the creative stunting and tumbling routines that characterize Heat’s performances.  He offers private lessons for interested athletes.

Lisa Stanek

Although she officially spends much of her time as the receptionist, Lisa is a cheerleading World Champion and often pulls double duty in the gym when the coaches need an extra set of hands.  Her bright smile and cheerful personality make her a favorite of parents and kids alike.

Gabe is one of our USASF certified coaches and, when he is not busy as an EMT first responder, he teaches some of our tumbling classes.  His witty sense of humor and fun personality make him a favorite among our younger athletes.
